PROTECTION

The preservation value of the Thatcher Woods corridor lies in the human experience of its natural character in the middle of a major metropolis. We need to protect these remnant natural areas, representative of pre-settlement Illinois history, now and for future generations. We need also not to misuse, through contamination or neglect, this rare ecological landscape. Dumping of debris or yard waste, venturing off the designated pathways with mountain bikes, forming new foot paths over the herbaceous ground cover, and the cutting or removal of plants are common examples of misuse. Visitors can help in the stewardship by reporting any perceived misuse or suspicious activity to the Forest Preserve District of Cook County police at 708/771-1000.
