The 3rd installment of:
|
"How To Restore Your Old House
|
|
...Without Going Crazy" |
|

This year’s (2003) restoration event, “How to Restore Your House Without
Going Crazy” was a brilliant success. The event took place
April 12 in River Forest, Illinois. Thanks to Kelli Kline, our
most indefatigable volunteer, the event was very well planned and
took place without a hitch. For those villagers who could not
make it to the event, we can only tell you what you missed and
hope to see you next year!
In the morning of the event, our guest, preservation and
restoration expert, Bob Yapp entertained our group of about 50
people with a no-holds-barred walk around a River Forest
neighborhood. Pointing out some of the positive
characteristics, maintenance needs and once or twice (pulling no
punches) giving sharp critiques on rehab blunders in the
neighborhood, Bob captured his audience with his knowledge, his
straightforwardness and his charm.

After a lunch provided by Erik’s
Deli of Oak Park, Bob gave a 3 hour lecture/seminar in the beautiful
ambiance of the historic River Forest Women’s Club. We thank the Women
and the Village of River Forest for the use of the building. Covering
many subjects, from the evils of vinyl replacement windows, to blown-in
insulation, to sanding (or not) the patina off of your historic floors,
audience member were invited to ask questions throughout – and they did.

Two lucky
members walked away from the event with a little something extra. Peter Morava
offered a gift certificate from his art glass studio as a door prize and at the
end of the day, the Historical Society’s Director, Frank Lipo auctioned off Bob
Yapp himself! The highest bidder Karen Mansfield bought Bob’s services for one
hour to visit her Oak Park home and give her a thorough analysis of the
building’s condition and discuss any maintenance issues. Thank you Karen for
your generous bid.
We
already have plans to do a 4th installment of this event next year.
Depending on Bob’s schedule, we think it would again be a treat for our two
villages to invite him back next year. After all there are no shortage of
wonderful homes (and restoration blunders) for Bob to give us his expert
analyses!
