Edward F. Dunne
Edward F. Dunne was born in Connecticut in 1853 and two years later moved with his parents to Peoria, Ill. He graduated from Peoria High School, The University of Dublin and in 1876 went on to study law in Chicago where he was elected to the bar. Dunne married Elizabeth J. Kelly in 1880 and the two had thirteen children. He and his family moved to River Forest in 1887 and settled on Gale Ave. Within five years, Dunne was elected to the Cook County Circuit Court Bench at the age of 38. He presided as judge on many important Illinois and national court cases relating to utility and street transportation monopolies. He was considered by many in his day to be a reformer and an honest politician at a time when corruption in politics was rampant. Dunne ran on a Democratic Party ticket and was twice elected as Circuit Court Judge before becoming mayor of Chicago. Dunne left River Forest in 1902 and within three years was elected as Chicago mayor with the help from many influential people including President Theodore Roosevelt. After two terms as mayor, Dunne took a break from politics before deciding to run for Illinois Governor. He was elected governor in 1912 and served until 1916. He retired from politics completely after his term. He decided to spend time with his family and enjoy his favorite pastime: reading. In 1933, he wrote a five-volume set on Illinois History, which includes information on himself and his involvement in shaping Illinois legislation. A copy is in the Historical Society collection. He died in 1937.
